Ophthalmic Assistant: Screener

Introduction: The husband of Heather, our Screener, is being transferred to Bartlesville with ConocoPhillips therefore creating an opening in our office.  The position we are seeking to fill is that of Screener (take patients back and record information, perform measurements and provide patient education [i.e. pre and post op cataract instruction]).  We are beginning the process of soliciting potential candidates to fill this position.

Qualifications:  Outgoing personality, intelligence, self-directed and multi-tasking abilities required.  Excellent oral communication skills and good handwriting are very important.  We are a very busy, fast-paced office and the person filling this position must be able to move quickly, be self-motivated and enjoy working with a variety of personalities (i.e., our patients).

While it would be nice to find someone with experience in a medical or optometric office, or have medical training (COA, LPI, CMA, CNA, etc.), if you have always dreamed of working in a doctor's office with direct patient contact, we would seriously consider bringing you on with no prior experience/training if you are an exceptional candidate (Heather had no previous experience).  We will provide all training necessary (see #6 below).

Job Description: Your main responsibilities include the following:

1) screening patients (recording information into chart before doctor examines patient and performing ophthalmic measurements and tests)

2) taking measurements (such as for calculating intra-ocular lens implants for cataract surgery, etc.)

3) patient instruction (instructing patients regarding eye diseases & treatments, surgical procedures and answering patient questions, etc.)

4) working in the front office: you will, as time permits, assist in filing charts, answering the phone, etc. when you have a lull in your work in the back office.  You will be eventually trained to work the front office when Dr. Poland is out of the office (this responsibility is shared with other staff).

Hours: As in most doctors offices, this position requires flexibility.  The approximate hours are as follows:

Monday       8:00 a.m. to 11:45+ and 12:55 p.m. to 4:45+ p.m.

Tuesday       8:00 a.m. to 11:45+ and 12:55 p.m. to 4:45+ p.m.

Wednesday  Approx. 10:00 a.m. to 11:45+ and 12:55 p.m. to 4:30+ p.m. (You often will not work Wednesday mornings or will work reduced hours as Dr. Poland is performing surgery and there are no patients in the office)

Thursday      8:00 a.m. to 11:45+ and 12:55 p.m. to 4:45+ p.m.

Friday          8:00 a.m. to 12:00+ p.m.

Please note the following:

1. These hours are approximate, as the hours in a doctor's office are set by the patient.  Total hours in a regular work week will be around 30 hours, some weeks more and some weeks less.

2. Dr. Poland is out of the office approximately 6-8 weeks a year (vacation, professional meetings, seminars and training, etc.) and usually only one person works during these times.  You will be trained to work some of these weeks, but not all of them. These dates are known well in advance so you can make plans while off.

Compensation: Starting pay will be based upon qualifications with advancements in pay based upon job performance and attitude. You will receive a raise with completion of home study course (you get this as soon as you complete the course - when is entirely dependant on you) and another raise when you become certified (after one year of work and completing a test).  Additional raises are provided as you progress and learn and are based upon performance and attitude.  Benefits for this position include the following:

1. Paid Holidays (seven eight hour days each year)

2. Paid Vacation (one week after one year, two weeks after two years)

3. Paid Sick Leave (we pay you for what you don't use!)

4. Retirement Plan (fully funded by Dr. Poland)

5. Professional Courtesy for ophthalmic care for immediate family.

6. We also provide the opportunity and strongly encourage you to become a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (C.O.A.) with the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). This involves a home study course, exams and written attestation from Dr. Poland on your expertise. We will provide the textbook, experience, training and pay for the exams for you.  Using a combination of one-to-one instruction, on the job training, home study course, videos and printed material, we will teach you everything you need to know!  Having your C.O.A. certification provides worldwide recognition of your level of knowledge, experience and abilities (see www.jcahpo.org for more information on certification).

7. We believe another benefit is working in a professional office with excellent co-workers!
